State of the Arts

A 2015 survey shows interest in the arts highest in a decade.

Singapore’s economy may have been down in 2015 but arts attendance rose to an all-time high of 78 per cent — according to the National Arts Council’s Population Survey on the Arts 2015, which is based on over 2,000 door-to-door interviews conducted with Singaporeans and Permanent Residents from January to March 2016.

Eight in 10 Singapore residents attended at least one arts event/activity. This is partly due to a growing recognition of the individual, community and national benefits of engaging in the arts. Among non-attendees, the top two reasons cited were no interest in the arts and family commitments. Also interesting to note is the proliferation of arts consumption online: nine in 10 Singapore citizens read, viewed or listened to some form of arts content via digital media.
