Singaporean artist and printmaker Weixin
Singaporean artist and printmaker Weixin Quek Chong roots her arts in the tactile, tangible materiality of print and image reproduction in ‘Among Plants and Animals’. One of five Singaporean contemporary artists selected to show at the prestigious President’s Young Talents 2018 exhibition concurrently at SAM at 8Q, ‘Among Plants and Animals’ is a great chance for the public to explore Weixin’s range of works.
Alongside ‘Among Plants and Animals’, Weixin will showcase works from existing series Exponential Taxonomies, orchidia lust lush, and SUDOR: flores nativas. Inspired by books about plants, her technical expertise and choice of material give her works a glossy, almost artificial magazine sheen. Her work stems from her fascination with the stylisation of natural elements, digital and organic memory systems, and the relationship between surface and perceived superficiality.
Weixin’s works include live plants represented in William Farquhar-commissioned botanical drawings, or more modern, manual beautification methods like application of make-up and cosmetics. Core to her practice are the interactions of the digital and organic, and the effects and methods of reproducing and manipulating images across images.
Weixin’s opening show will be held on 18 October 2018 from 7.30pm at SPRMRKT’s Cluny Court location. Chef-owner Joseph Yeo presents a special botanical-inspired salad that will be revealed at the opening, and available on the menu throughout the duration of her show.
