Hemen Mazumdar: The Last Romantic.

Hemen Mazumdar: The Last Romantic will feature 35 works of Hemen Mazumdar and is the first international exhibition of the artist.

The exhibition is curated by Dr.

Caterina Corni and is located at De Suantio Gallery, Singapore Management University.

Hemen Mazumdar (1894-1948) was a major 20th century artist of India.

While Orientalism (championed by Abanindranath Tagore) and the “Indian style” of art (pioneered by Jamini Roy) claimed central focus in the first decades of the 20th century, Hemen unremittingly opposed this.

Instead, he chose to negotiate in his own unique manner the contradictions between Western and Eastern art.

He was widely recognized for any medium of art he chose to express his emotions with however his true skill lay in the way he handled oil on canvas.

Bengali women draped in wet saris fascinated him and this obsession ultimately became his trademark.
