This presentation juxtaposes two research practices that are contemporary engagements with histories of modern art in Southeast Asia.

First, from the Buddhist Archive of Photography in Luang Prabang, Laos, which gathers over 35,000 photographs either taken or collected by monks since 1890.

The photographs have recently been digitised and catalogued, using innovative methodologies attentive to climatic, cultural and religious circumstances.

Second, is a project by collaborating contemporary artists Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho, whose research focuses on Filipino-American modernist painter, Alfonso Ossorio (1916–1990), drawing on his 1950 mural, the “Angry Christ,” painted in a chapel located alongside a sugar refinery, in Victorias, Philippines.

This project is organised by Dr Roger Nelson, Postdoctoral Fellow at NTU ADM / NTU CCA Singapore.
