Local filmmaker K. Rajagopal’s 2016 drama film “A Yellow Bird” picked up two awards at this year’s 20th Vietnamese Film Festival.
Under this umbrella event was the ASEAN FILM FESTIVAL where the film had been nominated in four categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Film. “A Yellow Bird” eventually won Best Film and Best Actor for lead actor Sivakumar Palakrishnan.
“A Yellow Bird” revolves around Siva, a man who is freed from prison only to find himself feeling just as imprisoned in Singapore society. During last year’s Cannes Film Festival, it was selected for the International Critics’ Week. To prepare for this role, Rajagopal had asked actor Sivakumar to live on the streets of Singapore’s Little India to truly understand what it meant to be part of the underbelly of society.
