SIFA 2015 forays into unconventional performance spaces.

From a 310-minute ‘karaoke-installation-fashion runway’ performance at the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (The Incredible Adventures of Border Crossers, 17-19 September) to intimate theatre experiences in HDB living rooms, this year’s Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) will bring audiences beyond the usual theatre spaces. Expect to see Kumar, everyone’s favourite stand-up comedian, hit the heartlands for Kumar’s Living Together (6-15 August) — all part of the new SIFA network, which brings free performances to informal venues around the island. Returning is The O.P.E.N. (16 June-4 July), a pre-festival public engagement initiative that connects the public to the themes presented in the main Festival. In addition to The O.P.E.N. Pass ($45), single entry tickets ($10) will be made available this year.

Themed ‘POST-Empires’, SIFA 2015 will span seven weekends (6 August-19 September) and feature commissioned Singapore works and international acts, including Cabanons, a cutting-edge circus performance in an art-installation stage, and dirtsong by indigenous Australian artists. Another first — a dance festival within SIFA itself!

Tickets are now on sale via Sistic. For more information, visit www.sifa.sg.

A different side of Lee Kuan Yew to be revealed in musical.

“Through her, we were given a glimpse of the softer and more private side of Mr Lee Kuan Yew,” says actress Sharon Au of her role as the late LKY’s wife, Mdm Kwa Geok Choo.
While Metropolitan Productions’ The LKY Musical is a tribute to the extraordinary life, vision and leadership of LKY (played by Adrian Pang), central to the tale is the love story between Lee and Kwa, and the impact it made on the man. The story unfolds from their early days at Raffles College to the founding of independent Singapore.

Based on the work of Singaporean novelist Meira Chand, the musical will be helmed by veteran London theatre director Steven Dexter, with lyrics by the Olivier Award-winning Stephen Clark and music written by Dick Lee.

The world premiere of The LKY Musical takes place at the Marina Bay Sands’ MasterCard Theatres on 24 July. Tickets available via Sistic.
