All the Right Steps!

Singapore dance group The Débutante brought home not just one, but three trophies at the Australian leg of the United Dance Organisation‘s (UDO’s) championships last Saturday.

Despite being only a few years old, the all-female crew has made it their mission to showcase Singaporean skills in overseas dance markets, scoring second place at the Gatsby Dance Contest Asian Finals in 2014 under the group’s former name of Siren. To enter in UDO’s world championships, they raised funds over the past few months – through giving workshops, or selling clothes and merchandise at bazaar booths and online – to enter the contest’s Australian leg in Melbourne. They managed to secure partial sponsorships from Scoot for their return flights, and from a supporter for their Australian accommodation.

It all paid off when The Débutante not only beat out the Australian talent to be crowned Champions, but received the Most Inspirational Award and crew member Angelene Wong was named Favourite Female Dancer. The Débutante will represent Singapore at the UDO Street Dance World Championship Grand Finals in Glasgow either this or next August, to be determined according to the crew’s Singapore commitments.
