The 2017 Singapore International Festival of Arts ended earlier this month with a bang, reaching over an audience size of 218,000 with ticket sales above 85%.
This is 63,000 more people reached compared to its 2016 edition, and is a fitting finale for Founding Festival Director Ong Keng Sen.
There were 111 unique events which stretched over from 28 June till 9 September. The thought-provoking and participatory approach to many of this year’s SIFA programmes are aligned with Ong’s vision of creating new ways of engaging with art. Coupled with the festival theme “Enchantment”, Ong said that he “recognised that we needed to set aside apathy, self-pity and believe that we can still connect to things that matter…because when one is enchanted with life, one would still desire to create a better world for all of us to live in.”
The next SIFA will be led by Gaurav Kripalani, artistic director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre, and will be held from 27 April to 13 May 2018.
