The President of Singapore recognises local artists through the Istana Art Collection.

On 20 June, President Tony Tan hosted a tea reception at the Istana for esteemed Singapore artists and the advisory committee for the Istana Art Collection to recognise their contribution to the local art scene. The rarely publicised Istana Art Collection (part of the National Collection) was established in 1994 and comprises works by Singaporean artists in a variety of mediums, including paintings, ceramics, photographs and site-specific installations. Curated to reflect Singapore’s art history and cultural achievements, and displayed on a rotational basis, the collection includes works by Cultural Medallion recipients Han Sai Por and Iskandar Jalil, and photographer Russel Wong. The latest addition is ‘Istana Garden’, a triptych by batik painter Sarkasi Said. The public can view part of the collection at Istana open-house events — the next is on 18 October, in celebration of Deepavali.
