MUSICIAN AND COMEDIAN SIVA CHOY, 1947 – 2018

Siva Choy, the local musician and comedian best known for writing and performing the 1991 iconic Singlish rap song “Why U So Like Dat?” passed away last Sunday, 4 March 2018 in Perth, where he’s been primarily based at since the ‘90s.

Choy had suffered two strokes which left him in a coma for two days. According to a report by The Straits Times, Choy had been “still jamming away” up until a month ago.

Choy was a man of many talents, and besides singing and playing multiple instruments, he was also a stand-up comedian, actor, writer and a pioneer of blues music in Singapore.

The “Why U So Like Dat?” album which Choy released in 1991 with the defunct comedy group Kopi Kat Klan sold over 40,0000 copies, a sales figure that was unprecedented at that point in time.

Choy also had a supporting role in the local soccer movie “One Leg Kicking” (2001), and authored the popular “Kitchi Boy” series about a group of local boys.
