Conceptualised by Visual Artists, Esther Ng, Francis Poon, Noc Vvyne Lim and Fish Jaafar and collaboration with Arudio The Art and Design Studio, as part of Tampines GRC PAssionArts Festival 2017.
Faces and cultural icons symbolising the various ethnic groups will be carved on wooden logs which will be displayed as “totems”. Traditionally, totems are used as an identity for a tribe to band together and form strong bonds. Similarly, we want to unite the diverse cultural backgrounds of Singaporeans and create a single, powerful totemic identity which we can all be a part of.
The use of logs from fallen or diseased trees, pruned by Tampines Town Council also helps to spread the message of conservation, and encourage the practice of recycling materials.
We are close to achieving the dream of having 100 Totems co-created and 1000 pre-schoolers along with their parents and family are expected for this event. Everyone is welcomed to add your co-creation as an lead up to the annual community arts festival in Singapore organised by the People’s Association Community Art and Culture Division, as well as in time for the Grand Opening of Our Tampines Hub in early Aug 2017!
