Pesta Raya: Main²
Teater Ekamatra (Singapore)
Esplanade Theatre Studio
20 – 23 Jul
8pm (Thu – Sun)
3pm (Sat & Sun)

The lives of six pained characters are interwoven together, each checkered by cycles of abuse—physical, emotional and psychological—and rocked by violence, self-inflicted and otherwise. This includes sobering episodes of incest, domestic abuse, lifelong drug abuse and sexual violence. Underlying this is a deep, simple yearning for happiness and love that they share.

Main² was commissioned by Esplanade for the very first Pesta Raya – Malay Festival of Arts in 2002, and was the first Malay language play to be staged at the arts centre. Written by Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit, it is a warts-and-all portrayal of the Malay community and its social strata, framed by the concept of main, literally meaning “the games we play”.

This new staging is directed by Aidli ‘Alin’ Mosbit, and features a new cast made up of Al-Matin Yatim, Farez Najid, Farhana M Noor, Hatta Said, Munah Bagharib and Suhaili Safari.

Bear witness as each character find themselves in “transit” after lifelong games of chasing happiness.

Contains some mature content. Recommended for 16 years and above.

Setan Jawa
Gamelan Garasi Seni Benawa (Indonesia) & Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (Singapore)
Esplanade Concert Hall
21 Jul, Fri, 8pm

If a single word could sum up the world première of Setan Jawa, it would be ‘bewitching’… Setan Jawa drew much applause from its enraptured audience; it is a shame that it showed for just one night only. – Australian Book Review

What would you sacrifice to save your lover?
A young man is kept distant from his lover by a strict and unforgiving society. He’d go through hell to be with her, but when a deal with the devil goes sour, hell comes to him instead.

This collaboration across cultures brings together a 20-piece Indonesian ensemble and members of a western orchestra to conjure the bewitching live score for the new film, Setan Jawa. A lavish black-and-white work of suspenseful cinema directed by revered Indonesian filmmaker, Garin Nugroho, Setan Jawa’s soundtrack has been jointly written by award-winning Australian composer/conductor Iain Grandage and renowned Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah.

Inspired by the classic horror film Nosferatu and the rich imagery of Javanese mythology, Setan Jawa is a silent film of lavish and arresting imagery. The stunning score has been created during an extensive and insightful period of exchange between Australian and Indonesian musicians, with theatrical heavy-hitter Grandage joining forces with Supanggah, best known in Melbourne for scoring Robert Wilson’s majestic I La Galigo.

The result is a work rich with mysticism and theatrical sensuality, and an event worth selling your soul to catch.

Directed by Garin Nugroho(Indonesia)
Composed by Rahayu Supanggah(Indonesia) and Iain Grandage (Australia)

Setan Jawa was commissioned by Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

Hikayat Gundik Berirama
The Venopian Solitude feat .gif (Malaysia/Singapore)
Esplanade Recital Studio
21 Jul, Fri, 8pm

What do a tissue box, a ukulele, a toilet roll, and a children’s xylophone have in common? Suiko Takahara (not her real name, by the way). The Selangor-born singer-songwriter fashions quirky sounds and rhythms out of anything she can get her hands on, and it doesn’t stop there.

Created eight years ago in a dusty room of an undisclosed college dormitory, The Venopian Solitude is Takahara’s labour of love and music project through which she gets to put on her experimental cap. The trilingual artist writes in Malay, English and Japanese, and released her debut eight-track album, Hikayat Perawan Majnun (Tales of a Lunatic Damsel), in 2014. She was nominated for Best Music Arrangement, Best Music Video and Best Album Recording at Malaysia’s music industry awards, Anugerah Industri Muzik 2014.

This July, Takahara and her band meet Singapore electronic duo .gif in an evening of eclectic beats, synths and immersive vocals, ready to invade your head space with music that does more than kill time.

Payung Teduh (Indonesia)
Esplanade Recital Studio
22 Jul, Sat, 8pm

One of Indonesia’s rising indie-alternative musical groups, Payung Teduh, makes its way to Singapore this July.

For Is (vocalist/guitarist) and Comi (double bassist), what started out as jamming sessions in college became a full-fledged love affair with their self-styled music, which has since flourished with the addition of drummer Cito and “guitarlele” player Ivan.

Warm and fuzzy, mellow yet breezy, the signature sound that the four-man outfit has carved out for themselves blends folk, keroncong, pop and jazz with a touch of the ’60s—and their musical horizons are still expanding. Deep and emotionally-driven, the lyrics too have been described as poetry that haunts the mind with a sense of vulnerability.

Released in 2010, their debut album, Self-Titled, features the hit song, Angin Pujaan Hujan. The group has gone on to release two other albums, Dunia Batas, and the most recent Live and Loud.

Join the boy wonders as they embrace you with lush instrumentation and the songs that their fans hold dear.
