Event Details

What if death does not have to do us apart? Such is the belief of the Torajan people, an ancient civilization that still exists in the highland region of Sulawesi, Indonesia. In Toraja, death is celebrated and made into huge festivities, instead of mourned. Join us this February at ICN 2018: Lakonna, an original musical produced and performed by Indonesian students at Nanyang Technological University, to witness this exotic and interesting culture. Lakonna is inspired by a centuries-old folktale from Tana Toraja called ‘Batingna Lebonna’ that still retains relevance in modern times.

The musical follows two brothers, Arrang and Bayo. They are the sons of the respected and beloved head of the village. As the firstborn, Arrang is set to be the next head of the village upon his father’s passing. Charming, accomplished, and adored by the villagers, Arrang seems to have it all. His life is complete when he meets the love of his life, Tanoana. However, his relationship with Tanoana ignites jealousy in Malitta, an ambitious friend of Arrang who is determined to have Arrang for herself. Arrang’s seemingly perfect life is also tainted by Bayo’s resentment for living in the shadow of his brother and being overlooked for the village head position. When Malitta’s plan to get what she wants goes awry, Arrang is forced to choose between the love of his life and fulfilling his father’s wish for him to be the head of the village. This is a tale about human’s ambition and how far people are willing to go to get what they want.

This classic love story from the land where “happy ever after” prevails even after death will be brought to life for one night at the Drama Centre Theatre, Singapore. With original music and dances that tell the exotic Torajan tale, the musical is bound to be an immersive cultural experience and unforgettable entertainment.
