Breaking Waves is an open
Breaking Waves is an open call and exhibition platform for emerging Singapore-based curatorial voices to conceptualise exhibitions on the theme of art and mental health. Its focus is the development of original and thoughtful ideas, increasing the accessibility of art to the general public. The platform encourages the application of theories through practice, while engaging in capacity-building and identifying future leaders in the visual arts community. By addressing the theme of mental health through art, Breaking Waves confronts a subject usually viewed as ‘taboo’ – allowing artists to engage the inner workings of social conscience and instigating reflection and dialogue.
Breaking Waves is made up of two exhibitions — The Deepest Blue & Head Spinning, Loop Creating.
Taking the format of speed dating sessions, the gallery spaces of both exhibitions will feature one long table each. Two strangers will be paired up with each other to discuss their views of both exhibitions. This event invites viewers to step outside one’s zone of comfort by sharing with a stranger, and to engage in an exchange of perspectives in light of the topics both exhibitions touch upon.
Short, ten-minute slots will be made available for viewers to sign up online. A series of questions will be prepared by the curators to help guide conversations.

About the exhibitions:
• THE DEEPEST BLUE
The Deepest Blue is an exhibition that examines how water has been used as a metaphorical articulation for experiences surrounding mental health. Four Singapore-based artists will be interpreting and responding to the stories of chosen works from the past.
• HEAD SPINNING, LOOP CREATING
‘Head spinning, loop creating’ showcases a journey of how different minds explores ideas of space and control stemming from experiences with anxiety. The four artists will be presenting what is usually formless into a frame.
