Checkpoint Theatre wins 50/50 Applause Award for promoting gender equality.
In their 2016/2017 season, Singapore’s Checkpoint Theatre staged Oon Shu An’s #UnicornMoment, Faith Ng’s Normal, and Claire Wong and Noorlinah Mohamed’s Recalling Mother — three sterling productions written by female playwrights. In recognition of their efforts to champion diverse voices and stories and ensure gender parity, the theatre company received the 50/50 Applause Award (for the second-year running) from the International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP), which celebrates theatre companies that produce a season with an equal or greater number of plays written by women. Checkpoint Theatre is among 58 theatres throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Singapore and Tasmania to be commended.
