Sri Warisan, a performing arts company founded by Cultural Medallion recipient Som Said in 1997, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year with a full year of activities, culminating in the launch of Mdm Som’s first publication, Seni Tari Melayu di Singapura, Perjalanan Som Said (The Art of Malay Dance in Singapore: Som Said’s Journey) on 6 January. Supported by the National Arts Council and the Malay Language Learning and Promotion Committee, the book — written in Malay — was launched by Senior Parliamentary Secretary, associate professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim at The Pod at the National Library Building. “I decided to write the book to share my 50-year personal dance journey as well as the history, background and evolution of Malay dance in Singapore,” shares Mdm Som. Copies are available for sale at Sri Warisan at $49.
